The show starts with Baby Charles featuring Dionne Charles as a lead singer; a deep funk version of the Artic Monkeys track "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor". There is also some fusion, by Jimmy Owens, jazz trumpeteer from his album Headin Home in a kinda Eddie Henderson style. If this is fusion, I'm your man!
Spacy work by keyboardplayer Gene Harris and different from his work with The Three Sounds. More spaciness, but now from St Louis, comes from Coultrain, from his 2007 debut album the Adventures of Seymour Liberty, a record that, to tell you the truth, I actually overlooked last year, but fortunately my man Mitch tipped me.
Then Parkdale, there it is, the second album by Elizabeth Shepherd and a Dizzy Gillespie cover that you don't hear that often. This is going to be in the Royal Groove 2008 list of best albums.
Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv label celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007. They took the occasion to form the Sonarkollektiv Orchester - a Sonar Kollektiv super-group made up of label artists and friends. Listen to the track Atlantic. Also listen to the soul with a hip hop attitude from Middle Child and J Rawls.
Jazz critics had definitely diffuculties with the Nightflight release by Hungarian jazz guitar player Gabor Szabo. The album was considered to be highly commercial. And although we don't consider this his best track or album, Keep Smilin has a kind of mellow vibe that we like, with a little bit of Willie DeVaughn's Be Thankful For What You Got.
Finally, one of the Nouveau Vague singers, Marina Celeste, with the sweet bossa joint Manon from her first solo album Acidule, that comes with a little help from mister Nouveau Vague, Marc Collin.
