Two albums so far by Brazilian guitar player Toco, released on the Italian Schema label and in the same tradition as partner in crime Rosalia da Souza, meaning some classic sounding bossa. Funky jazz, fusion or jazz funk, whatever you want to call it, but arranger Dave Matthew, who did some great work with James Brown too, did a good job with his version of Vera Cruz. I have been playing some tracks before by the imaginary Stance Brothers, a project by Teppo “Teddy Rok” Mäkynen, featuring the imaginary members the brothers Isiah and Dwayne Stance plus Byron Breaks. Verve recently released their fourth edition of the Remixed series and some people are calling this the best album of the series. Some unusual suspects this time like Diplo, 9th Wonder and Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. Please listen to the Royal Groove choice: the Truth and Soul version of Dinah Washington's Cry Me A River. Very productive, former skateboarder and folky funk man Tommy Guerrero comes with a track from his latest album. Lo-fi and a bit similar to guys like Shawn Lee or the Nigerian Keziah Jones. Zimpala, the Bordeaux collective with four albums so far and this electro jazz tune (whatever) is a good example for their sound.
I have this thing going on with the track Nature Boy, and whenever I found a new version I want to hear it. My friends know this and thanks to Cortez I have yet another one to listen to, by Gandalf this time. One of Britain’s finest sax players mister Joel Purnell with a new album together with a tight jazz unit, that features Zoltan Dekany on bass, Jamil Sheriff on piano and John Perry on drums. Another winner from the British jazz scene. Former Groove Theory singer Amel Larrieux from her debut album.
Dutch entrepreneur Nalden - aka Naldisney - presents the 20 year old HayZee, one of the Netherlands finest talents, by releasing his first beat tape Next Level. HayZee could be recognized by the influence of his passion for 8-bit games - like Mario, Metroid, Megaman - in the beats he produced. Press start please! A little bit of funk, a little bit of afro beat and a little bit of soul. Mixed up and you'll get close to the sound on the self titled album by Ophir 'Kutiman' Kutiel, released on Melting Pot Music.
Finally, Belgian sweetness by the legendary Wizards of Ooze.
