Exclusive interview by Oliver Wang - from
Soul Sides - about Latin icon Joe Bataan. Joe Bataan was born Bataan Nitollano in 1942 in New York. He was the product of an unconventional union of the time: his father, Peter Nitollano, grew up in Manila, in the Philippines Islands; his mother, Marie Seldom, was African American, originally from Newport News, Virginia.
Joe Bataan's first two albums for Fania, Gypsy Woman and Subway Joe, were almost like a single album split in half — both featured similar kinds of ballads and boogaloos. With Riot!, his third Fania album, Bataan began to come into his own as an artist and was moving in a new directions, especially on stage.
